Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE
Ranulph Fiennes was described by the Guinness Book of Records as "the world's greatest explorer". Born in 1944, Sir Ranulph Fiennes was educated at Eton. He served with the Scots Greys for a time before joining the SAS. In 1968, he joined the Army of the Sultan of Oman, and in 1970 was awarded the Sultan's Bravery medal.
Since 1969, when he led the British expedition on the White Nile, Sir Ranulph has been at the forefront of many exploratory expeditions. From 1979-82, Fiennes embarked on 'Transglobe' - the first circumnavigation of the world's polaraxis with Charles Burton.
HiIn 1986, together with Dr Michael Stroud, he achieved 'the furthest north unsupported' record during a North Polar Expedition. The Anglo Soviet North Pole expedition in 1990-1 achieved the furthest north record. The Ubar Expedition in 1991 discovered Ptolemy's long-lost Atlantis of the Sands, the frankincense centre of the world. In 1992-93 the Pentland South Pole Expedition with Dr Stroud, achieved the first unsupported crossing of the Antarctic continent and was the longest unsupported polar journey in history.
His expeditions have raised over £3 million for the Multiple Sclerosis Society which have enabled the charity to build Europe's first MS research centre in Cambridge. Fiennes received the Polar Medal with bar for Arctic and Antarctic exploration achievements in 1987, and an OBE for human endeavour and charitable services in 1993. In 1995, a second clasp to his existing Polar Medal was awarded, which makes Fiennes the only explorer to be awarded a double clasp each of which acknowledges both Arctic and Antartic achievements. In 2003, he completed the Land Rover 7x7x7 Challenge, 7 marathons in 7 days in 7 Contintents!
Sir Ranulph's presentation is an account of his life of adventure, told with a self deprecating sense of humour, and with many analogies that can be drawn between the characteristics needed both for the challenges Sir Ranulph has met on expeditions and for everyday business life. See how Sir Ranulph tackles the questions of leadership, teamwork, goal setting, determination, self-belief and dealing with an emergency heart bypass operation. An inspiring and motivating talk illustrated with excellent slides.
